David Beckham Overcame Adversity

I just want people to see me as a hard-working footballer and someone who is passionate about the game.

-David Beckham

David Beckham was born in London, England on May 2, 1975. When he was around nine, he was determined to be a football player and believed it was possible for him to achieve. He practiced hard with a strong focus on his dream, and by 14 he had signed a contract with Manchester United, his favourite team. While Beckham received a lot of honours, he made a mistake, which he acknowledged too, of kicking an opposition player. This resulted in a penalty kick, which some felt made England lose its chance of winning the 1998 World Cup. Some fans began to bully and threaten him. He even had to have police escort him to games on occasions. This was one of the most difficult times of his life. But he continued to play soccer and, in 2002, he scored a goal in the World Cup to help England win, which won him back the support of fans.

In the last 10 years I’ve probably been through a lot of ups and downs in football and in life and I’ve come out of it.
